Carco Winch Drum Seal

After years of working on so many winches we get the opportunity to see "themes" and common repairs. In this case we are working on the Carco 50b and Carco 70a. (Also known as the CAT PA55 and PA56.) On ceo f the common repairs we deal with is the drum oil seal. The drum shaft is not fully submerged in oil, but the bottom of the shaft and bearings are in a oil bath. Over time these seals can fail, and you'll see more of an oil leak when operating the winch on a hillside or slope. If the winch shows any leak, you can expect the drum adapters to look like the ones in the video below.
We used to order the drum seals before tearing apart the winch. We would often have to get a 2nd shipment including the steel drum adapters because most of the ones we were pulling were beyond cost effective repair. Now we keep a spare set of drum adapters on the shelf or make sure to tear the winch down completely before ordering parts. We recommend the same thing for customers doing their own repairs because you can loose a lot of time repairing a dozer winch going back and forth if you don't have the parts needed.
