The W12E winch is the largest PTO-driven towing winch on the general market, suitable for dozers up to 600HP. For massive jobs where compromise is not an option, the W12E is the preferred choice of towing winch for handling the toughest towing challenges. Typically used in mining, railroad wreck recovery, and large pipeline construction, the W12E winch can work under sustained load for long periods without adding excess heat to the dozer hydraulic system. The extreme duty drum seal option makes submerged operation feasible without risk of water and grit intrusion.
Contractors who choose the W12EE7S experience no loss of pulling power as the drum fills with rope when equipped with the 148:1 slow speed gear ratio. Additional gear reduction in the #7 ratio allow for max line pull ratings bare drum and full drum of nearly 140,000 lbs. When equipped with the current GENII electronic controls, the W12E offers previously unavailable control from a PTO winch.
The W12E is the best PTO winch on the market today for large dozers, but it's also the only PTO winch still in production today. Carco, Paccar, and CAT no longer manufacture a PTO winch for large dozers like the CAT D8T - D10T. Many people in the industry are moving towards lower cost, high control, variable speed hydraulic drive winches. The Hydraulic winches in this class like the Allied H12E and Paccar H140 (AKA PA140) both offer similar max bare drum line pulls around 140,000 and fantastic line inching control, but the huge difference between PTO and hydraulic winches is in the full drum pulling capacity and increased cycle time. Hydraulic winches have less access to the dozers power via the hydraulic system compared to PTO, and are limited hydraulically in the winch motor as the wire spools into the drum decreasing pulling power. The robust construction of the W12E can handle huge loads repeatedly, and arguably, only limited to the breaking strength of the 1-1/4" wire rope. On paper, the Hydraulic and PTO winches look similar, but those who operate them know there is a huge difference when comparing control and full drum puling power. If you need a proven platform for heavy loads, the W12E is a fantastic and proven choice.
